It's Rare to See Such Clean Results in an Older Dog
These words mean so much to me; it's not just validating but also immensely reassuring.Â
You all know Cooper, my little nuggie heart dog. I don't know his exact age, but he came into my life 10 years ago! The estimate is he's around 12-13. So, he is a senior, but still going strong. He’s still the boss of everyone, tells the cats when they're misbehaving, and goes on daily pack walks.
Earlier this week, Cooper went to the vet for his annual exam, which included bloodwork, a fecal test, and a heartworm check. He came backÂ
heartworm and parasite-free. Dr. J is always impressed that Cooper doesn’t have a heart murmur, as it’s common in senior Chihuahuas. Dr. J called this morning with the results of his bloodwork—everything is normal, including his cardio health. "It's rare to see such clean results in an older dog," but Cooper did!
Do you know how good that felt? The relief? The breath I could finally take? The last time I had a senior pet, it didn’t end so happily. I don’t want to relive that.
The positive that came out of it is Jolie taught me how to advocate for my floofy babies. Since Jolie was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism in 2008, I've learned so much about feline nutrition, herbs, and homeopathy. I don't want to take away from Cooper's good news, so I'll share my origin story another time.
What's the secret to Cooper's clean bill of health? First, a lot of it is genetics and can't be controlled. But for what I can control, I feed him real food, limit exposure to toxins, and support the aging process with food therapy, including mushrooms and chlorella. His life is filled with enrichment—no couch potatoes here! Inside, he’s the house manager. Outside, he supervises me when I change all the water buckets and troughs, and he’s responsible for finding and greeting all the gopher tortoises. Good Time Charlie is his favorite!
I Â love this little guy. He came into my life and taught me how to open my heart again. My greatest teacher. Â We share a great love and understanding of each other. I am happy and relieved he is in good health, and my intuition was spot on for the good news. You can have positive hits too!
